Why Fight Malaria??????

  • We lose a child to malaria every 30 seconds

  • We have a "9-11" every single day-losing 3,000 people a day-mostly children

  • Malaria is a bigger killer than AIDS

  • Malaria is preventable but infects 350-500 million people each year

  • Ninty percent of deaths caused by malaria occur in Africa

  • Mosquito bed nets can prevent the transmission of malaria by 50%

  • One insecticidal $10 bed net can save 1-4 lives

  • Malaria threatens half of the worlds population

Please educate yourself about malaria by following this link to a July 2007 National Geographic article on the subject.

Nothing But Nets Challenge
In reading the above facts about malaria it is easy to have great sympathy for those endangered and affected by the scourge of malaria. It is a great challenge, as members of Nothing But Nets Netraiser Teams, to realize that 1 percent of action is better than 100 percent of sympathy and pity. Your Netraiser team can make a difference...your Netraiser team can have a major impact on the global community.

How the Nothing But Nets Program Originated

THIS SPORTS ILLUSTRATED ARTICLE BY RICK REILLY AND ISSUED IN MAY OF 2006 IS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE NOTHING BUT NETS PROGRAM

I've never asked for anything before, right? Well, sorry, I'm asking now.
We need nets. Not hoop nets, soccer nets or lacrosse nets. Not New Jersey Nets or dot-nets or clarinets. Mosquito nets.
See, nearly 3,000 kids die every day in Africa from malaria. And according to the World Health Organization, transmission of the disease would be reduced by 60% with the use of mosquito nets and prompt treatment for the infected.
Three thousand kids! That's a 9/11 every day!
Put it this way: Let's say your little Justin's Kickin' Kangaroos have a big youth soccer tournament on Saturday. There are 15 kids on the team, 10 teams in the tourney. And there are 20 of these tournaments going on all over town. Suddenly, every one of these
kids gets chills and fever, then starts throwing up and then gets short of breath. And in seven to 10 days, they're all dead of malaria.
We gotta get these nets. They're coated with an insecticide and cost between $4 and $6. You need about $10, all told, to get them shipped and installed. Some nets can cover a family of four. And they last four years. If we can cut the spread of disease, 10
bucks means a kid might get to live. Make it $20 and more kids are saved.
So, here's the ask: If you have ever gotten a thrill by throwing, kicking, knocking, dunking, slamming, putting up, cutting down or jumping over a net, please go to a special site we've set up through the United Nations Foundation. The address is:
UNFoundation.org/malaria. Then just look for the big SI's Nothing But Net logo (or call 202-887-9040) and donate $20. Bang. You might have just saved a kid's life.
Or would you rather have the new Beastie Boys CD?
You're a coach, parent, player, gym teacher or even just a fan who likes watching balls fly into nets, send $20. You saved a life. Take the rest of the day off.
If you have ever had a net in the driveway, front lawn or on your head at McDonald's, send $20. You ever imagined Angelina Jolie in fishnets, $20. So you stay home and eat on the dinette. You'll live.
Hey, Dick's Sporting Goods. You have 255 stores. How about you kick in a dime every time you sell a net? Hey, NBA players, hockey stars and tennis pros, how about you donate $20 every time one of your shots hits the net? Maria Sharapova, you don't
think this applies to you just because you're Russian? Nyet!
I tried to think how many times I have said or written the word "net" in 28 years of sports writing, and I came up with, conservatively, 20,000. So I've already started us off with a $20,000 donation. That's a whole lot of lives. Together, we could come up
with $1 million, net. How many lives would that save? More than 50 times the population of Nett Lake, Minn.
I know what you're thinking: Yeah, but bottom line, how much of our $1 million goes to nets? All of it. Thanks to Ted Turner, who donated $1 billion to create the U.N. Foundation, which covers all the overhead, "every cent will go to nets," says Andrea Gay,
the U.N. Foundation's Director of Children's Health.
Nets work! Bill and Melinda Gates have just about finished single-handedly covering every bed in Zambia. Maybe we can't cover an entire Zambia, but I bet we could put a serious dent in Malawi.
It's not like we're betting on some scientist somewhere coming up with a cure. And it's not like warlords are going to hijack a truckload of nets. "Theoretically, if every person in Africa slept at night under a net," says Gay, "nobody need ever die of malaria again." You talk about a net profit.
My God, think of all the nets that are taken for granted in sports! Ping-Pong nets. Batting cage nets. Terrell Owens's bassinet.
If you sit behind the plate at a baseball game, you watch the action through a net. You download the highlights on Netscape and forward it on the net to your friend Ben-net while eating Raisinets. Sports is nothing but net. So next time you think of a net, go to that website and click yourself happy. Way more fun than your fantasy bowling league, dude.
One last vignette: A few years back, we took the family to Tanzania, which is ravaged by malaria now. We visited a school and played soccer with the kids. Must've been 50 on each team, running and laughing. A taped-up wad of newspapers was the ball and two rocks were the goal. Most fun I ever had getting whupped. When we got home, we sent
some balls and nets.
I kick myself now for that. How many of those kids are dead because we sent the wrong nets?

Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets National Netraiser Team Goals

To request every elementary, middle school, high school and college in America and
Canada to join the Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets Netraiser Program. The goal
is to attract a minimum of 50+ schools per state to join in the fight to prevent Malaria.
Each school Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets Netraiser Team will set their own
fundraising goals with a minimum goal of $2,000 plus. 100% of all funds raised will be
administered through the United Nations Foundation located in Washington, D.C. The
majority of school netraiser teams will far exceed the minimum goal of $2,000. (The
pilot project conducted in Salina, Kansas with 4 participating schools raised an average
of $2,500 per school) If our national goal of an average of 50 schools. In 50 states we
would raise $100,000 per state and a national total of Five Million dollars. This would
equate to the saving of one million lives plus the matching one million lives saved by the
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for a grand total of two million lives saved. (based on
a single $10 net saving a minimum of 2 lives per insecticidal mosquito bed net.

You and your Netraiser team can save a family, a church, a school or a village.

Has the Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets Program Been Successful In America?

The answer to the above question is a resounding "YES" !!!!! During the school year 2007-2008 a pilot project originated in Salina, Kansas. This pilot project was formed to determine the success of a Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets program. The Salina, Kansas project raised $10,000 PLUS (funds are still coming in). The $10,000 raised equates to the saving of 4,000 lives. This includes the matching funds by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The Salina, Kansas project raised enough money to purchase 1,000 ten dollar bed nets. With the matching Gates Foundation this makes a total of 2,000 bed nets. An average of two lives per $10 bed net brings a total of 4,000 lives saved.

The Salina project was conducted in four local middle and high schools. A Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets Customized Basketball Game was placed in four schools. The Pop-A-Shot games were donated to the schools by local businesses. Pop-A-Shot, Inc made the games available at a discounted price plus donated one bed net for each game purchased. The games were set up at the four schools at their home basketball games and also in the school cafeteria. A $1 donation was charged to every participant. An ongoing tournament lasting the length of the home basketball season provided on site prizes as well as grand prizes. Participants could playas many times as they desired in an effort to beat their previous high score. The prizes were donated by local businesses and solicited by the net raiser team. The games were manned by students who were involved in school community service programs or student volunteer work. Netraiser teams were also using sites other then their schools such as youth rallies, church conferences, local and state basketball tournaments, malls. In addition to funds raised with the Pop-A-Shot game other fund raising venues were used, a city wide chamber of commerce mailing, donor sheets at game site locations, mailings to various professionals such as physicians, attorneys, etc.

The Salina Pilot Project Uncovered Many New Insights Into the Proper Way To Conduct The On Going Tournament and Other Nothing But Nets Fundraiser Activities

  1. Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets Games are most successful with the elementary and middle school youngsters. Especially the elementary age children.

  2. It takes a minimum of one highly motivated net raiser team leader to oversee the program.

  3. Middle schools and Elementary schools are superior to high school in terms of interest. Elementary school students with hand written donor requests are very effective in soliciting funds. Many Elementary schools are looking for charitable projects for their students.

  4. It is vitally important that at least one adult be at the game site location to insure the proper administration of the ongoing tournament. It is difficult for students to correct fellow students when they are abusive with the game. Examples: Shooter needs space to shoot, player is to shoot from in front and next to game, no horseplay, no hanging on net, no touching of score device, slamming ball into backboard or score clock ... Etc.

  5. A minimum fee of $1.00 is the best fee for a participant to play.

  6. It is vital to have both GRAND PRIZES and ON SITE PRIZES. Prizes for the top 5 or 10 males and females. Here is a sample of the GRAND PRIZES:

    TOP FIVE MALE GRAND PRIZES
    1. Autographed KS Univ. Mens Basketball
    2. Autographed KS State Mens Basketball
    3. Brookville Hotel Restaurant (Dinner for 2) $50
    4. Martinelles Italian Restaurant (Dinner for 2)
    5. McDonalds Dinners For (6)

    TOP FIVE FEMALE GRAND PRIZES
    1. Autographed KS Univ. Womens Basketball
    2. Autographed KS State Womens Basketball
    3. Brookville Hotel Restaurant (Dinner for 2) $50
    4. Martinelles Italian Restaurant (Dinner for 2)
    5. McDonalds Dinners For (6)

Above prizes are solicited by the net raiser team and awarded at the conclusion of the respective schools home basketball season to top five males and female scorers.

    ON SITE
The onsite prizes can be solicited locally but the Salina, Kansas pilot project took donated funds and purchased the following on site prizes from a wholesale Carnival store.

Carnival Store Contact: Oriental Trading Phone: 1-800-526-9300, Fax: 1-800-741-2599, www.orientaltrading.com

Stovecap Multi Colored Hats.............80 points or higher
4" Inflatable Basketballs...................75 points or higher
Plastic Neon Colored Fedora Hats.......70 points or higher
Basketball Kick balls.........................65 points or higher
Go Crazy (Spring Out) Glasses...........60 points or higher
Sport Wrist Bands (Assorted)............55 points or higher
Basketball Noise Clappers.................50 points or higher
The above gifts are very inexpensive. Once a player wins a prize, he or she must exceed to the next level to win another prize. AGAIN, IT IS VITAL THAT NO PLAYER RECEIVE TWO PRIZES UNLESS THEY EXCEED THEIR FIRST PRIZE LEVEL!!!!!!! This is another reason for an adult supervisor to insure that prizes do not mysteriously disappear and also that the money is properly administered.....

  7. BEST CONTACT SUGGESTIONS - (Who do you approach in order to gain approval from schools) Hopefully, the adult supervisor is a high profile person in the community which gives a better opportunity to get approval from the schools. The school athletic director is a first suggested contact. Create enthusiasm and sell the Athletic Director and he or she can approach the school administration. Second suggestion is to find out which teacher in the school who is associated with community service or volunteer activities in the school. A face to face proposal is vital to gaining the schools sanction of the Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets program. A high profile parent is another good avenue to present the program who in turn can approach the school principal, booster club or Parent Teacher Organization. It is extremely difficult for the school administrators to say - NO when several parents back the program. Many teachers in the middle school and elementary schools are looking for charitable/volunteer projects for their students. School clubs (Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Lettermans Club, etc.) are also other possible ways to gain school approval.

  8. FREQUENT STUMBLING BLOCKS TO GET SCHOOL APPROVAL
    a. Teachers have their plates full and can't take on another project.
Suggested Answer: I'm sure I can find one teacher or parent who would be more than willing to sponsor the program.
    b. Our students are already involved with many fund raising projects.
Suggested Answer: I understand that most schools have drives to assist the school budget with many projects. However the Nothing But Nets program shows students that they can associate themselves with a HUMANITARIAN EFFORT to SAVE LIVES and make a GLOBAL IMPACT with their volunteer efforts. It gives students a "hands on" experience of the great joy of being involved in public service.
    c. I think the Nothing But Nets program is a worthwhile project but it does not assist or serve our local students.
Suggested Answer: The majority of school fund raising projects are selfserving.
The Nothing But Nets program teaches students that we indeed are "OUR
BROTHERS KEEPERS" (Genesis 6:4) The child in Africa is equal in the eyes of God with the child in your home town. One of the greatest lessons in life is the willingness to serve our fellow men. What better way to serve than by saving lives in our global community.

  9. WHY USE A POP-A-SHOT BASKETBALL GAME AS A FUND RAISER?
The term NOTHING BUT NETS is also basketball terminology meaning a Swish Shot so there is a natural association. The Pop-A-Shot game generates exposure for the program with its Customized Backboard and adjacent Signage. Pop-A-Shot is an addictive game that kids and adults love to play over and over. The Grand Prizes and Onsite Prizes encourage players to play over and over in an attempt to win a prize. This generates ongoing income for the program. Conducting an ongoing tournament through the course of the schools home basketball season
(October-March) generates funds for Nothing But Nets. Using a Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets basketball game provides a FUN atmospher and creates ENTHUSIASM for the project.

  10. ARE THERE OTHER WAYS TO GENERATE FUNDS FOR NOTHING BUT NETS
YES, there are as many ways to raise funds as there are creative ideas. Some of the fund raising activities used by the Salina, Kansas pilot program were: *After PROM, *School Dances, *Donor sheets at games
    a. Place game in school cafeteria as well as at home basketball games
    b. A mass mailing to city chamber of commerce businesses
    c. Mailings to professional groups signed by prominent physician, lawyer and the net raiser sponsor
    d. Use games at church youth rallies and conferences
    e. Request funds from local charitable foundations
    f. Make personal calls to request donations. Personally call on city "heavy hitters"
    g. Have students send hand written mailings to 25 of their friends
    h. Set game up at local malls with signage, prizes, etc.
    i. Sell Skeeter Killer "T" Shirts
    j. Your own creative ideas *car wash *auction *Dance-A-thon *Baby Sit *Yard Sale *Fairs *Festivals *School Carnivals

  11. HOW CAN WE PUBLICIZE AND CREATE AN AWARENESS OF THE NOTHING BUT NETS
    PROGRAM?

    a. Letters to the editor
    b. Newspaper articles about the Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets school ongoing tournament conducted at the schools home basketball games. Invite everyone (ALL AGES)
    to play.
    c. Radio/Local TV interviews with net raiser students and or sponsor.
    d. Have an initial rally
    e. Have the school public address publicize the programs at home games (several times)
    f. Have large, bold & colorful signage at game site locations
    g. Articles in school paper
    h. Complimentary newspaper ads

Decide How You will Obtain a Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets Electronic Basketball Game

The easiest way to obtain a game is to have a local business donate the game to the school. (The pilot project in Salina, Kansas called on the banks and had 4 games donated) If not the local banks, try the fast food stores in your town. All businesses and or persons donating to assist you in purchasing your game or for other aids will be given highly visible signage at your game site or sites. Many times several parents will chip in to purchase your game. If you can't get the game donated you will have to conduct fund raising activities and events to obtain funds for your game.

Suggested Ways to Earn Money to Purchase your Netraiser Team Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets Electronic Basketball Game

  • The Salina, Kansas Pilot Project had the local banks donate (4) games to each school.

  • Solicit a local sponsor to donate the purchase price of the game. Explain to prospective sponsor or sponsors the purpose and mission of your netraiser team. Explain how your team plans on using Pop-A-Shot game to save lives. Communicate why your team has decided to join in the fight against malaria. Explain that the game will be used as a fundraiser to purchase mosquito nets to save lives. Explain game will be used at home basketball games, school events, local venues, fairs, festivals, etc.

  • Solicit a local sign/graphics company to donate a banner for your display booth. Display the sponsors names on the banner or adjacent signs or side of the game.

  • When soliciting a sponsor, it is vital that you have a face to face meeting. Call the prospective sponsors secretary and request a 10 minute meeting. When the secretary asks "what is this in reference too?" a simple "saving lives with Nothing But Nets" will suffice. When meeting with the sponsor, point out that their firm will receive a great deal of positive exposure and signage publicity at the display site.

  • Solicit companies to have their individual sign located near the display area. Have a sponsors poster. .. .Large sign showing sponsors ($100 per company). Consider asking fast food chains.

  • Have a car wash with good signage. Ask local stores with large parking lots to allow you to use their lot. Look for highly trafficked areas.

  • Hold an auction.

  • Have a Dance-A-Thon

  • Have your team lease themselves for a day (rake leaves, baby sit, paint, etc.)

  • Have a yard sale

  • Organize a concert with local musicians

  • Create your own great ideas. Be innovative.

Here are Suggested Ways to Conduct Your Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets Game Booth and How to Conduct an Ongoing Tournament

  1. Your Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets Basketball Game will be the focal point of your fundraiser display. Determine the highest trafficked area in the foyer or mezzaine. If setting up at a school basketball game, attempt to set up close to the concession area. Local malls are good site areas, as well as fairs, festivals, and church conferences and camps.

  2. Make sure your display is manned at all times. At basketball game events your busiest time is at half time, as well as before and after the game. The majority of the fans will be in the stands, however many younger kids will be in the area, thus the importance of maintaining your supervision. Make sure your display is not setup near the playing area, otherwise an errant ball might interrupt play.

  3. We suggest that you have a minimum of two Netraiser team members to conduct and supervise the game.

  4. We suggest a charge of $1.00-5.00 per game played. One team member will take the money and supervise play and the other team member will record the score of the participant.

  5. To create the most interest and have people play many times you should conduct an ongoing tournament. A player can play as many times as they desire. However, the fee to play for each game is $1.00-5.00. The recorder will record the initial score of the player as well as each time that the player betters their own score. The recorder needs to have an alphabetized record book.

  6. Supervisors would wear Nothing But Nets t-shirts. You could probably get a local graphics/print store to donate a few t-shirts for your supervisors. A banner down the most visible sided of the net is one other option to dress up your booth.

  7. The idea for an ongoing tournament is to award the winners at the conclusion of the tournament. This may be a one day event or an entire length of an activity. If you setup for a home basketball season, the best scores at the end of the final game would be recognized as the champ, runner-up, third, fourth, etc.

  8. Prizes are extremely important to the success of your Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets netraiser. Prized may range from free vacation flights (donated by travel agency, t-shirts, mini basketballs, trophies, plaques, shopping cards, funny hats, fast food give-a-ways, free restaurant meals, school memorabilia,...basically anything of intrinsic value....

  9. If you can display the top "20" scores and post on a chalk board in front of your booth, you can create a great deal of interest and have more play. This way players can figure out what scores they have to beat to move up the chart.

  10. Your Netraiser team can work to obtain the prices from local merchants.

  11. Have blank registration forms where people who desire can donate to purchase a net for $10 on behalf of some individuals or an organization. A good sign requesting people to buy a net and save 4 lives would be a big assist.

  12. Download publicity ideas from: www.nothingbutnets.net

  13. Have an adult sponsor or team netraiser leader/captain/director keep an accurate account of all Nothing But Nets revenues received. Established a bank account in a local bank. Send monthly Nothing But Nets monies to:

Nothing But Nets
Attn: United Nations Foundation
1800 Massachusetts Ave N.W. Suite #400
Washington, DC 20036

We suggest that each Pop-A-Shot Benefiting Nothing But Nets booth have forms available to hand out to participants to use as a Nothing But Nets donor sheets. It would also be a good idea to include addressed envelopes with the Nothing But Nets address where all the donor has to do is include their check and a stamp. If you participants wish to donate online, they need to go to: www.nothingbutnets.net to make their donation.

Here is a an Adobe PDF version of a form that you may find useful to hand out to your players to encourage them to send in a Nothing But Nets donation.

Netraiser Teams Must Have An Attitude Of Gratitude
In the Salina, Kansas pilot project a personal note was sent to each and every contributor. This personal acknowledgement of every donation is a huge help in sustaining the Nothing But Nets program year after year.

Good Record Keeping Is Vital
Keep a file with a photo copy ofevery check you receive and also a copy of the personal ''thank you" note you sent to the donor. The sponsor or adult director needs to administer the funds received.

Cash On Hand At Display Site a Must
We suggest the sponsor obtain from school petty cash $50 in available money in order to make change. The bulk of the players will pay with one dollar bills. It is important to be able to change a larger bill. We suggest the following (ten-1's, four-5's, two-10's)
